Building Media Momentum: Before, During and After Kickoff

The coverage started in September, at a chefs’ tailgate with no teams announced yet. It ran through team arrivals, coaches’ press conferences and a pep rally, peaked on a national ESPN telecast, and was still surfacing in mid-January as the bowl’s name followed players into the transfer portal.

Why it held up

The game was one day. The story had two peaks.

Most bowl games get one news cycle. This one was built to get several. The buildup was programmed as press: a September tailgate that put the bowl on food and lifestyle desks three months early, a December team announcement staged with back-to-back virtual press conferences, then a week of arrivals, coaches’ availability, beach parties, a kickoff luncheon and a first-year pep rally — each one a reason for a camera to show up before anyone kicked off.

Then the second peak, which most properties never get. The transfer portal opened, and reporters covering roster moves at Kansas State, UCLA, UConn, UCF and James Madison needed one line to establish who a player was. They used the Boca Raton Bowl. That is the pattern the BlueIvy method is built to create: a result becomes a story, a story becomes a reference, and the reference becomes the shorthand a reporter reaches for weeks later, at a program that had nothing to do with the game.

The name is the asset

Title partners rotate. “Boca Raton Bowl” was the identifier reporters used in 89% of profiled clips — the constant the coverage attaches itself to, year over year.

What it did
  1. Opened the press cycle in September, three months before a team was named, through a chefs’ tailgate that drew a record 550+ attendees.

  2. Turned the team announcement into a two-hour media event, with back-to-back press conferences putting both athletic directors and head coaches in front of reporters the same evening.

  3. Programmed bowl week as coverage — airport arrivals, coaches’ availability, beach parties, a kickoff luncheon and a new joint pep rally, each a separate press opportunity.

  4. Delivered the game to a national ESPN audience of 1.6 million average viewers, peaking at 2.4 million, with simultaneous ESPN Radio and local ESPN 106.3 coverage.

  5. Generated 6,133 mentions and 12.85 billion audience impressions, with national desks — SI.com, Yahoo! Sports, On3, 247Sports and the ACC’s own network — carrying it from game day through mid-January.

  6. Turned the result into a credential, cited in transfer-portal and roster coverage at programs well beyond the two teams on the field.

  7. Reached past the sports page into morning and lifestyle programming across ten-plus markets, plus national radio on ESPN Radio, Fox Sports Radio and CBS News Radio.

  8. Traveled internationally, with pickup in Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, India, New Zealand, Singapore and the UAE.

  9. Carried a community story through the whole arc — a holiday gift drive serving 1,000+ local children, complimentary tickets for nonprofits and first responders, and an on-field First Responder honor delivered on the national broadcast.

The road to the bowl

A one-day game with a four-month press calendar in front of it.

A bowl game is handed its teams sixteen days before kickoff. Everything before that has to be built. The Boca Raton Bowl builds it — a September fundraiser, a city holiday parade, a chamber breakfast, a team-announcement broadcast, then a full week of arrivals and events across Palm Beach County before the teams ever reach the field.

That calendar is why the coverage does not live or die on a Tuesday afternoon in December. It gave food writers, lifestyle editors, business desks, community-affairs producers and local morning shows their own reasons to cover a football game — and it is why the outlet list runs well past the sports page.
